"No He Can't. He's a Pig."
"does whatever a spider pig does"
I saw The Simpsons Movie last night. It wasn't great. But, since my expectations weren't too high based on various reviews, I was far from disappointed (actually, it was pretty damn good -- come on, how could it be bad? It's The Simpsons Movie for f's sake!)
And we came out of the theatre singing Homer Simpson's version of "Spider Pig." About which my friend, before we were halfway out of the lobby, said "I see a new post in less than 48 hours." "Naw," I said. "I don't think that's gonna happen."
Well, the seed was planted, and the damn thing's been stuck in my head all day. So, here you go Julie.
Now you can have all 14 seconds of Homer's vocal and 60 seconds of the choral version of "Spider Pig" on your iPod. Whoo hoo! The Hans Zimmer choral version is on the official Soundtrack; Homer's vocal clip is not.
In case you haven't seen or read about the film yet, it has an environmental theme, as noted by Grist, which is particularly fond of the scene where Nelson bullies Milhouse into expressing climate change skepticism, then punches him in the face, yelling, "That's for selling out your beliefs!" Arnold Schwarzenegger is President and Lisa presents Al Gore's "An Irritating Truth."And to round out this tangential post (I really should be working on a D.St (Grandmixer DXT) guest post for scholar over at Souled On), here's two of the best covers of the original Spider-Man cartoon theme song, both of which I haven't heard in quite a while. The Ramones version is taken from Saturday Morning Cartoon's Greatest Hits. Who better to cover Spider-Man than the Ramones? The Tenacious D live track is hilarious, but not for the easily offended.
purchase The Simpsons Movie Soundtrack.
los amigos will return with the usual hip hop, jazz, funk, etc. fare soon enough. Speaking of jazz and summer movies, check the podcast Jeff over at the great jazz blog/podcast Straight No Chaser put together back in June in honor of the release of Spiderman 3. The Superheroes podcast featues Sun Ra's "I'm Gonna Unmask the Batman," Naked City's (Zorn) cover of the "Batman Theme," Stan Getz version of Chick Corea's "Captain Marvel," and two jazz covers of the "Spider-Man Theme."
p.s. "Can he swing from a web? / No he can't. He's a Pig."
p.p.s. "Spider-Man doesn't look right. He looks like cheap ass. / Spidey, wearing the Nike shoes. I can see the fuckin' BVD outines . . ."
. . .
Labels: Ramones, Tenacious D, The Simpsons

Funny thing... if you listen to the Ramones Spiderman with your ears half-closed on tinny laptop speakers, you'd swear they were singing "Spider-Pig, Spider-Pig" too :-)
