It's Like That (drop the break . . . )

Lake George photo by Tonya
I'm back from a whirlwind weekend. After a having an absolutely fabulous time at the wedding of my dear friends Rob & Cam up in Lake George, I returned to Boston where an old friend from L.A. (yo Mike!) was in town for a conference and crashing at my place. So the past couple days (pedestrian dinner plans, drunken going away bash for a co-worker) seemed a bit anti-climactic.
Although others have already blogged the crap out of the wedding (hi Tonya, hey Charley), I want to do a brief post recapping my virtual DJ experience.
As I commented on Charley's blog, DJing the wedding was blast --
I'm sure real DJs droppin' the break at a wedding would not be sympathetic. Hey, "it's like that (and that's the way it is)."
It's Like That (Drop the Break -- Jason's Battle Blaster Mix) -- RUN-D.M.C. vs. Jason Nevins (1984 vs. 1997)
Jason Nevin's Run-D.M.C. remix was one of the DJ's personal selections, held in reserve, that did not get played at the wedding. But i did manage to sneak in a few mixtape like passages, most of which went over just fine. Here's one example (all tracks heavily edited and mixed together, but posted here as individual mp3s -- dump 'em into a playlist to reconstruct the mix):
V.I.P. -- Jungle Brothers Deceptafreak -- Missy Elliot vs. Le Tigre Rockstar -- Kathleen Hanna Deceptacon -- Le Tigre Sunshowers (Piracy Funds Terrorism Mix) -- M.I.A. & Diplo Disco Infiltrator -- LCD Soundsystem Popcorn -- No it's Not Kraftwerk Crystal Seed v.3.0 -- The Roots vs. NewOrder
Not all of the mash-ups went over well. In response to "Bizarre Light Triangle" (the NewOrder classic mashed w/ "Ray of Light") Alex actually said she'd like to kill whoever decided to mash Madonna with NO (at least she didn't want to kill me). And Charley said that mash-ups that make something great out of two mediocre tracks are one thing, but "defiling the sacred 'Decepatcon' like that . . . I dunno . . . " (or words to that effect).
peace. grab your iPod and be your own virtual DJ . . .

except for that stretch when four or five guests came up in relatively short order to inform me that a new direction was needed and suggest the type of things that must be played next. And of course each request involved radically different views of what new direction would cure the problem evidenced by the crowded dance floor (at least two of which would’ve cleared same).

Hello.. sounds a million times better than the kind of crap you normally hear played out at weddings!
Do you think you could send me a ysi or the mp3 for the whole of Deceptafreak? (kevin.smith@SPAMBUSTERgmx.net?)
Hey Kev --
you got it (check your email).
for anyone else out there, note the entire mash may be found here:
http://djdurutti.blogspot.com/2005/06/le-tigre-vs-missy-elliot-this-weeks.html
(for obvious reasons, mash-ups don't get taken down).
p.s. btw, the posted Jungle Brothers track (the fantastic V.I.P.) is basically complete.
yo Matt!
Is that you in the photo? ... Man, hope you got paid like a wedding DJ. You'd be loaded, man!
Yeah, I did use the word defile, but not sacred. But man, Deceptacon is so good on its own, and that thing it was mashed with was so...nothing, you know? I think mash-ups are great when they take two bad things and make one good thing, but here they took one good thing, one bad thing, and made an imho bad thing. Such a tease, you know - it would start being Deceptacon, but then the good part was just about to come and the song switched to something else...
Of course, I also like 'em better when I don't know the songs they're made from.
Ok Charley --
as that ass wipe Bill O'Reilly would say "I guess we'll have to agree to disagree." But you're wrong. Missy takes a back seat to no one. "Get Ur Freak On" is an awesome track. Just as great in its own way as "Decepatcon." And i'll be damned if i'm gonna sit here and let you denigrate Miss E. ;-) Ok.
Oh, and what makes this such a great mash, imho, is that it takes two killer tracks and makes something nearly as strong as both originals. i think the fit is particularly good. it rocks. 'nuff said. Except that you're wrong. but i already said that.
Heh... Cam and I actually spent a lot of time talking about what we did and didn't hear at the wedding. Of course we were involved in our whirlwind of socializing, etc., so it was a bit hard to remember and reconstruct. But _I_ would have been happy to hear any of these on the dance floor. Of course that would have required another three or four hours of dancing... I don't think I coulda' survived.
Just so everyone knows, the Groom and the Bride both think djdurutti rocked the Adirondacks! Thanks again, Matt.
