All Samples Cleared: Gnarls Barkley vs. Gianfranco Reverberi

Gnarls Barkley at Coachella: We're not in Kansas Any More Cee-Lo

I didn't expect to be posting about Gnarls Barkley again (well, at least not for quite a while). I first posted about Sir Gnarls back in March, as "Crazy" was on the cusp of becoming the first song ever to reach the UK top of the pops based on downloads alone (before the single was actually released).

But good ol' Guuzbourg over at Filles Sourires just threw up the Gian Piero and Gianfranco Reverberi track from the Django spaghetti western Preparati la Bara! that Danger Mouse sampled to create "Crazy." And I just had to re-post the track along side the instrumental version of "Crazy" for your enjoyment and edification (Guuzbourg and I don't exactly have an overlapping readership after all). It's a real treat to hear what Danger Mouse did with the Morricone-like Nel Cimitero di Tuscon.

  • Nel Cimitero di Tuscon -- Gian Piero and Gianfranco Reverberi (1968)
  • Crazy (instrumental) -- Gnarls Barkley (2006)

  • Actually, Guuzbourg posted this over at the (relatively new) Splendida Project, at which I recently became a contributor (thanks for the invitation Bruno and Ian). The Splendida Project depends on posts from 15 contributors flung wide around the world. By definition and necessity, it's freewheeling and eclectic. Splendida also allows us contributors to reach a wider audience and post some beloved music that might not be a perfect fit for our own audioblogs. To wit, I recently did a Fado Português post featuring the late great Amália Rodrigues. I'll also post a companion piece featuring young Fado master Mariza.

p.s. As you may know, Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse are performing and appearing in publicity shots dressed only as well known movie characters. The Gnarls Barkley A Clockwork Orange and Wayne's World photos have become almost iconic images. Somehow I doubt that they'll ever appear or pose dressed as characters from Preparati la Bara! But maybe I'm mistaken. "Just a Thought."

UPDATE: here's a mash-up ("Crazy Intrusion") of Gnarls Barkley's instrumental ver. of "Crazy" sent to me by a faithful reader who mashed this together himself. Keep in mind that Douglas is not a DJ or professional musician (he's a jazz enthusiast, a crossword puzzle expert, and a professor in the Graduate Software Program at a University in St. Paul). Doug snaked a Madonna track in-and-out of Gnarls Barkley. I think the intrusion works quite well.

Brian/DangerMouse dressed as Terence Hill, and Cee-Lo as Bud Spencer, that would be an awesome publicity shot, no? ;-)

How about them dressed up as the two guys from I Spy?

I've twiddled with Crazy Intrusion a bit, and have it up at Crossword Bebop

    Yo Paul:

yeah but Taylor over at Kids Who Can't Read Good did credit Guuzbourg -- my man in Amsterdam and fellow Splendida Project co-conspirator. So it's all good.

    Waxy i don't know about.

hey, how was the José González/Juana Molina/Psapp show in NYC? The Boston show got forced inside @ the MFA due to threatening weather. Which meant that there really wasn't enough room for the sold-out gig. So they decided to bounce about half of the guest list -- including about 6 people on the Domino Records list -- including me. The MFA woman gatekeeper hadn't heard of bostonist or gothamist so my attempts to talk my way in despite being pulled from the list got nowhere. Should've said I was Paul Irish!!

any way, no bostonist review, unfortunately

aww man. sorry to hear about the Boston show..
Although I had tickets to the Bowery Ballroom one, some logistical difficulties forced me to miss the show.
I had a friend at the Boston show who very enthusiastically told me about a fucking amazing show that I (and you) totally missed out on.
    Hahah.. :) Cheers.
